From a Single Idea to a Movement of Hope
By Sophie Wyrick: Founder of Alex And Andy, and Uncle Andy’s niece
Alex Andy Andy began in December of 2020. My Uncle Andy had suffered a devastating stroke and required 24/7 care. We were facing the possibility of having to sell some of his belongings just to afford the support he needed, which was something I wasn’t going to let happen if I had the means to help. I remember standing in the hallway of the nursing home telling his sister Amy to give me some time, that I would figure something out.
One evening, I was sitting on the couch with Andy’s dog, Alex, who my husband and I were fostering while Andy recovered. Alex was wearing a cheap bandana when an idea came to me. I could create a fundraiser called Alex And Andy, sell pet bandanas, and share Andy’s story to raise money for his care. I posted a video that night and it went viral. Hundreds of orders came in. I had no business background, no sewing experience, and no plan, just a very deep desire to help someone I love.
When I gave Uncle Andy the money we raised, he teared up. In that moment, I saw something shift. I saw hope. I saw purpose. I saw light return to his eyes. That moment is when Alex And Andy stopped being just a fundraiser and became something more.
Andy’s stroke changed how I see life. It taught me how fragile and precious it is. Things we often overlook, talking, walking, eating, doing everyday tasks, are miracles. Life can change in an instant, and because of that, we choose to cherish the small moments.
I didn’t want to build something just for Andy. I wanted to build something with him. Watching him learn to draw with his left hand, create designs, and handwrite thank you cards amazes me every single day. His determination, strength, and refusal to quit inspire everything this brand stands for.
Alex And Andy exists to remind people they are not alone. Every design, every message, and every package is meant to make someone feel seen, loved, and understood. It’s for anyone walking through something hard. It’s for anyone who needs a reminder to keep going.
This journey has changed my life. It has shown me what perseverance truly looks like. It has shown me the power of kindness, community, and human connection. And it has shown me that even in the darkest seasons, something beautiful can still grow.
My hope is that Alex And Andy becomes more than a brand. I hope it becomes a safe place. A reminder. A source of comfort. A quiet voice that says: you matter, you’re not alone, and you can “grow through what you go through”.
Much Love,
Uncle Andy and Sophie
