From Darkness to Purpose: Why Darren Refuses to Stay Silent About Mental Health
There are some stories that begin with triumph. Others begin with struggle. Darren's story begins with loss.
Long before he ever considered starting a podcast or becoming an advocate for mental health awareness, Darren was navigating challenges that would shape the course of his life. As an adopted child, he often wrestled with questions and emotions that were difficult to understand. At just seven years old, he experienced the devastating loss of his best friend in a tragic train accident. Years later, he would lose his adoptive father to pancreatic cancer after spending much of their relationship trying to work through complicated feelings surrounding his adoption.
Those experiences left scars that followed him into adulthood. More losses came. Relationships ended. Grief accumulated. And through it all, Darren carried a burden that many people couldn't see—depression.
Like countless others who struggle with mental health, he often found himself hearing words that felt dismissive rather than supportive. People would tell him to "get over it" or question why certain events affected him so deeply. What many failed to understand was that depression doesn't operate on logic. It isn't something a person simply chooses to stop feeling. It can quietly consume every part of life, making even the smallest tasks feel overwhelming.
By the age of sixteen, the weight became too much to bear. Darren found himself in a place so dark that he attempted to take his own life. Looking back now, he doesn't describe it as wanting to die. Instead, he describes it as desperately wanting relief from pain he didn't know how to manage.
That experience would become one of the defining moments of his life.
Years later, after enduring more heartbreak and emotional struggles, Darren realized something important: staying silent wasn't helping him heal. In fact, silence was often where depression thrived. The more he kept his thoughts to himself, the heavier they became. He knew that if he wanted things to change—not only for himself but for others—he needed to start talking.
That decision eventually led to the creation of Men, Talk: Breaking the Stigma, a podcast dedicated to honest conversations about men's mental health. Darren saw a gap that desperately needed to be filled. Too many men were suffering in silence because they had been taught that vulnerability was weakness. Too many believed they had to carry every burden alone.
Society has spent generations telling men to be tough, to hide their emotions, and to push through pain without asking for help. Darren believes that message has done tremendous damage. He knows firsthand how isolating it can feel when you're struggling and convinced that nobody will understand.
His mission isn't to have all the answers. It's simply to create a space where people feel safe enough to be honest.
Ironically, one of the biggest lessons Darren has learned is that healing doesn't happen through massive breakthroughs. It happens through small, consistent steps. A walk outside. A therapy appointment. A difficult conversation with someone you trust. A decision to get out of bed when everything inside you says not to.
For Darren, exercise became one of those life changing steps. What started as a commitment to move his body each day gradually transformed into a powerful tool in his battle against depression. Over time, he lost nearly fifty pounds, but the physical transformation was only part of the story. More importantly, movement gave him a way to fight back against the isolation and negative thought patterns that depression often creates.
He often says that depression hates a moving target. It's a phrase that has become more than a slogan. It's a reminder that progress doesn't require perfection. It simply requires movement.
Today, Darren continues to face challenges. He doesn't pretend that depression has disappeared or that every day is easy. There are still moments when his mind feels heavy and old struggles resurface. The difference now is that he no longer faces those moments alone.
Through sharing his story, he's discovered something remarkable. Every time he opens up about his experiences, someone else finds the courage to share theirs. Friends, strangers, and listeners have reached out to tell him that his honesty made them feel seen. His willingness to speak openly about depression has created space for others to do the same.
And that's exactly why he keeps going.
Darren doesn't measure success by downloads, followers, or audience size. He measures it by impact. If one person decides to ask for help because of something he shared, then the conversation was worth having. If one man realizes he isn't alone, then the mission is working.
For anyone currently struggling with depression, anxiety, loneliness, or thoughts that feel impossible to carry, Darren wants you to know something he wishes more people had told him years ago: stay.
Stay for tomorrow. Stay for the people who love you. Stay because the way you feel today is not how you'll feel forever. Most importantly, stay because your story isn't over yet.
Darren's certainly isn't. What began as a story filled with grief, loss, and silence has become a story of purpose, connection, and hope. By sharing his journey, he's proving that vulnerability isn't weakness at all.
Sometimes, it's the very thing that saves a life!
