🧠 Understanding Aphasia: More Than Losing Words

Aphasia is a condition that affects a person’s ability to communicate. It can impact speaking, understanding language, reading, and writing. It’s often caused by stroke or brain injury, and it looks different for everyone who experiences it.

For Uncle Andy, aphasia became part of his life after his stroke. Some days words come easily. Other days, they don’t. Most days he knows exactly what he wants to say, but the words feel just out of reach. It can be frustrating, exhausting, and isolating but it doesn’t change who he is.

Aphasia doesn’t take away intelligence. It doesn’t take away personality. It doesn’t take away worth. It simply changes how communication happens. One of the ways Uncle Andy has found healing is through creativity with our small business. Learning to draw again using his non-dominant hand gave him a new way to express himself. Drawing our shirt designs has become something he enjoys doing and he loves making meaningful artwork that others can relate to. Art became another language.

If you or someone you love lives with aphasia, here are a few things that may help:

  • Be patient and allow extra time for responses
  • Use simple, clear sentences
  • Ask yes/no questions when possible
  • Encourage drawing, writing, or pointing
  • Celebrate progress, even when it feels small
  • Most importantly: lead with compassion.

Helpful Resources:

  • National Aphasia Association
  • American Stroke Association
  • Aphasia Recovery Connection

Living with aphasia isn’t easy. But with understanding, support, therapy, and encouragement, communication can continue in new and meaningful ways.

We see you. We honor your effort. Your voice still matters, it always has and always will!

Much Love,

Uncle Andy and Sophie
